Do Most Wisdom Teeth Really Need Removal?
Yes, many people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed at some point. While our wisdom teeth originally had a great use—our ancestors used their wisdom teeth thousands of years ago for chewing—we no longer have an actual use for them in most cases due to our modern dentistry and diets. Additionally, many of us don’t have room in our mouths for our wisdom teeth to come in, which means they end up impacted.
An impacted tooth is stuck in or below the gumline. To avoid impaction and resulting infection and decay, it’s important to have troublesome wisdom teeth removed promptly, and we generally recommend removal by an oral surgeon.
How Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Work?
The procedure will differ depending on the status of your wisdom teeth. If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted, they may not require surgical removal. Instead, it may be possible for the dentist to simply extract the teeth.
Since a wisdom tooth’s roots run very deep, however, we still recommend seeing an oral surgeon specifically for your wisdom teeth removal. An oral surgeon is best prepared to deal with any problems that arise, and they can anesthetize you for the procedure in their office if necessary.
Before we begin your procedure, we will ensure that you are fully informed and comfortable. We will also provide you with after-care instructions to promote the fastest and safest healing experience.
If you have concerns before your wisdom tooth removal or afterward, our skilled and knowledgeable team will be available to answer your questions.
